Long term im thinking Helical. Im more concerned with Road racing than drifting which is why i want a helical, I only want to learn to drift because i want to be well rounded in all driving diciplines. So a helical while i hear it is "unpredictable" for drifting, is still excellent for road racing and FAR superior to open diff for drifting. So its a win win situation !
at least you listen while you're arguing :P

a helical wouldn't be my choice simply because they aren't really cost effective for what you get IMHO... but if its what you want it sounds fine for what you want it for.

I'm a fan of the j30 one myself. Drives pretty well, especially if you get one that isn't worn out.

From what i understand...based on the principle of VLSD operation...Slip actually must occur before locking takes place...IE ..one output shaft sucks al lthe torque open diff style, which "spools" the fluid, which expands and physicaly forces the clutches to mesh. Then the other wheel starts spinning.

Is this right?

correct. But one thats in good shape... IMO is still the best bang for the buck

I'm not telling you which is better... just my opinion, as I have driven cars with both. Which is what you should do.

hunt down someone with a VLSD and ask to drive the car.

It's not a Kaaz by any means... but its not shabby for the price. :)

IMO a VLSD is the best diff design ever..

If it would work at peak effectiveness 100% of its life....Essentialy, the more slippage, the more lock..untill it burns up and you get the equivilant of brake fade XD...

I've enjoyed catching up on this thread, but I came in a bit late to play, so here is Mr. Serious.

VLSDs do wear out over time. There are no clutch plates in them. Even when new, their effectiveness is well below other types.... 100% of weak  is still less than 80% of awesome  .

Regardless... get an LSD if you want to slide. No amount of driver betterment theory changes the fact you will progress in drifting faster with an LSD; and you're not going to miss out on much or hamper your potential by "skipping" learning with an open diff. "Shit... why not master FF drifting FOERST... RWD is so much easier." lolwutme?
And when you get right down to it...The purpose of ANY suspension modification is to manipulate the cars dynamic weight distribution on the 4 tires.
That is so beyond simplified it's just wrong. There are many other factors, some even deal with steady state... think about a traditional skidpad test. There's also things like feel, predictability, and comfort, which might have to be balanced against performance.

Ok, nevermind:

Driving theory helps loads "In theory " :)

Whenever i make mistakes if i am too hot to improve on the spot i can always sit on it and analyze what i did and what i should do next time to make the car respond a certain way. Then my mentality is to drill it untill i get it right. I break it down into individual techniques and drill untill I get it, then move on.

But i cant say i have had much time to practice "drifting" i cant afford tires to practice on :( Im saving all my monies for a track day in november...and i have to consider brakes..clutch...Alignment..rotors......and i might have the hookup on some tires/ wheels which is why im not going to buy them...but once this is over and done with i should be able to budget in used tires every other week.
