try turning up the heat setting on the welder to get a little more penetration and it will smooth out. play with the speed too.. i taught myself to weld almost 10 yrs ago now, keep at it you'll figure out the tricks.

thanks! some hobart that was like 'best bang for your buck' mig, i'd have to tell you the numbers on it when i get to the shop i cant remember off hand. jerry has been giving me tips over the phone and stuff, but he basically just said i need more physical practice so i can learn from experience more. this is literally the 2nd thing ive ever welded, i can feel the differences and improvement already but i still dont know how to control them, still trying to figure out the technique and settings and etc.

some light spots on the rear spindle in the powder, but its got coverage and will never rust now or be seen lol. mocked up the rear, still powdering a lot of parts and waiting on new hardware to start making things permanent.

on your welding ..do you have an auto darken mask? if not it makes a HUGE difference in keeping your place/spacing.

heat and speed are good to play with, also the actual distance of the wand tip from the metal will make a bigggg difference in the puddle and keeping it liquid vs burning thru or getting good penetration. fine lines, but you'll get it. welding stuff is addicting. its cool to know you have the power to do pretty much anything once you get the hang of it. i really want a TiG next.

Yeah I powdercoat at my house, I just use an eastwood setup but really the ability to have a oven and a location is what it takes. Powdercoating is messy and creates quite a stench. Also, media blasting everything beforehand and other types of prep are really the time consuming process, much like painting.

Yeah I'm eager to learn a lot about welding, but just am learning as I go on my car. I dont have the patience or time to sit down and just practice on scrap metal, I'd rather just learn on my car. It's just an S13 anyways lol! Yeah once I can get the hang of the MIG, we have a nice TIG on hand also. Basically we had a very good fabricator/welder on staff and he just vamped out, so now all the stuff is here and with nobody to use it... so might as well practice since my car is all apart and stuff! I cant wait to at least feel proud of the beads i am laying down, even if they're just simply mediocre, because as you said your abilities are really limitless once the skill is acquired!

Right now I've got to get on the ball on powdercoating some stuff, its very time consuming and I haven't had much time pulling all the long days/nights at work. I plan on hopefully spending most of tomorrow coating all my stuff to catch up on work, then I have a bunch of Forrest's stuff so he wont have any excuses to why he's not assembling his car too haha! Once I finish coating I can get my rear stuff all reassembled and installed and put some wheels on it, then next step is to load the car on a trailer and strap it down to start straightening the frame out some... then front suspension is next as well as inside the cab and painless harness.

here're my updates san pics copied from another forum, ill take pics when something picture worthy is done lol!

Well got my fLCAs new energy suspension bushings in and new balljoints in last night, started changing my swaybar endlink bushings to new energy suspension bushings and come to find out i either lost or didnt receive 1 of the 8 bushings for the rear links! plus one of them was a ***8 instead of ***7 part number so I've got to call Energy Suspension Monday and ask about getting a couple more of those >_>. Sold my Cusco coilovers finally to a local buddy, so my rear is sitting on bottomed out arms hahah, looks like the car is bagged in the rear. You know its bad when the rear of your car has all the suspension and the front is bare metal... and the rear is LOWER! Also, my night of putting around the shop afterhours in a tired stupor didn't get much else accomplished other than painting my cleaned front x-member and removing my -an p/s setup from y old rack and draining it. Going to try to get the fLCAs onto the front x-member, remove the new oem inner tierods that came with my rack and install the PBM inners and megan outers, then the rack with new energy suspension bushings all onto the x-member. My boss decided he's going to get a argon-mix bottle for our mix, so im removing the tub that is poorly welded on and starting over with the correct gas, YAY! Also he's going to buy me some new wider trailer fenders to get some better clearance on the tubs, so i must thank him for throwing in on my build thats just taking up space in his shop hahaha! Very cool boss! Otherwise, all the metal work is really whats delaying me right now and my busy schedule, tired ass, and lack of free-time... blah.

we finally got the correct gas filled for our mig so we cutout the old tub and have started fresh. big thanks to drew for spending all day welding seams in my engine bay while we're waiting on the new tub fenders to arrive! i've removed all the sound deadening and am about halfway through sanding up all the tar-remains, following with drew doing some seam welding and fresh paint inside the cab to begin reassembly! also finished up my cluster today, still have to order some more gauges and then do my center console with gauge pods and switch panels, but this came out nicely utilizing the stock location! (some of those gauges are for mockup reasons only)

was just looking at the pics again. and the pbm camber arm on the other s13 is on the wrong side, they will hit the frame that way.
