Need some camera advice...

Post by leon.borden »

So Im just wondering... I see alot of guys doing awesome photography on here.... Exactly what type of cameras are being used? Im wanting to buy a new digital camera, but dont want to complete break the bank, because I have several planned mods for my car coming up. I'm wondering how nice of a camera I need to get some of the shots like you guys have managed. Would a 4 or 5mp be capabale? I know there are some Kodak 5mps for under 200... I can spend more if I have to... just wondering what kind of cameras most are using.

i have a nikon D70 digital SLR and it's awesome. the downside is the price ($1300 for the kit with 1 lens, + another few hundred for a zoom and a few hundred for memory cards), but i also have an older sony717 that's pretty good. you'd definately be alright with 4 or 5 mp too, and my biggest suggestion would be to search around http://www.dpreview.com (they offer tons of reviews and advice on pretty much every digital camera out there). i haven't kept up with the lower priced stuff lately however my dad just got a nice 4mp fuji S5100 with 10x optical zoom (pay attention to that, not digital) for $250 after rebate and it seems quite good so far. the biggest downsides with non-SLR cameras are the speed and lack of interchangable lenses, but i'm sure you'll be able to find something real nice if you do a little searching.

film is teh win. i shoot 4x5 view camera for most my art, or i'll be using my pentax 6x7 or nikon f3. i have used a canon digital rebel for a commercial gig and it sucked ass. the 20d is FAR better. haven't used any nikon digital stuff soooo i don't know, but most pro people i know if they use digital its canon. but whatever. read this:

it might help you make a decision...but don't really take any of it seriously...so maybe not. but its fun to read anyway if you're into photography.

next you have to choose a camera and brand.  if you're shooting 35 or digital you have pick between nikon and canon.  then you have to defend your brand tooth and nail until your death.  it doesn't matter which one is better because you are right.
camera store person:  you also can't hack it as a real photographer, but you also weren't good enough for grad school.  now you can peddle expensive shit to yuppies and act like you know everything there is to know about photography.  guess what you pretentious fuck?  you work at wolf.  you are half a step above CVS and you have the nerve to talk down to people.  fuck you.
Randy... you sir... are the MAN.

that depends on what kind of pictures your taking. some of the best photographs i've ever seen have been from holgas ($12) and from pinhole cameras which you can make yourself. you don't have to spend a lot of money to take good pictures.

Rule numeral uno: NEVER EVER BUY A KODAK CAMERA!
As of now, Nikon is one of the best for handheld point and shoot digitals in the lower price range. You can get a nice 5 megapixel for around $250. If you need any more advice just ask me, I used to sell cameras and I am a photographer. :D

it was a mamiya medium format, and it was broke.
