I don't think anybody buys it now after they restructured their pricing about 2 years ago. Seems only dealers and car sites have it now.

Yeah, I remember when you could get unlimited reports for a whole month for what they're asking for just one now.

And even then, they still don't tell the whole story. Buddy of mine bought a 335i from a dealer recently with a clean carfax but when he took it to get the windows tinted they found out the car had been super vandalized (all windows broken out, loads of body work, new panels, full respray) so he went to return it to the dealer and they said no. Too bad for them he's a lawyer for the DA's office.

I'm still gunning for a carfax. I may actually have to pay for one!

Carfax is worthless. When I worked at the auction we used to supply carfax reports for all the BMW's in the sale. I'd say about 30% were correct. Cars with unibody damage would be listed as Clean, True Mileage Unknown cars would be listed as clean and so on and so on. I would never trust a carfax. Autocheck is a little better as it uses the same methods carfax does and also picks up damage reports from the major auctions and what not on top of that, but still not perfect.

On the other hand, Carfax is good at one thing. Marketing and making people think it's an effective tool.

And as far as your buddy Taylor, the dealership will be fine. It's carfax the company he should go after, but nothing will come of it. Read small print.

It's not on carfax as he was only able to uncover the car's true past via police reports and found that it was the dealer who bought the car, fixed it up and never disclosed the info to relevant parties. And somehow in all that they escaped giving the car a branded title when it easily had enough damage to give it a salvage title. In all likelihood he'll just get his money back which is really all he wants. The 1M thing was just a joke that he made when I asked him what he was gonna do about it.
