Re: Gonna look at a suby this weekend
Well, turns out the tensioner was fine. It was the other toothed pulley that shat itself. Ugh. Went around to all the local stores to see if they had the tensioner (which they didn't) when I needed the one part I'm fairly certain at least one of them had.

She lives!
Threw the pulley on there and once I got the cam gears to cooperate it fired right up. Couldn't be happier right now.

Thats awesome man! Now call the previous owner and tell him that a few hours of wrench time could have given him a running car. You know, just to rub it in a bit

Re: Gonna look at a suby this weekend
Well that would certainly explain some of the stains.....
It runs fine. Puffed a little smoke out the tailpipe on startup but has been fine since then. Drove it out to get some early lunch and listened for any odd noises but I didn't hear any. No odd smells, either and it pulls great. Just gave it a full tank at the Kroger so we'll see how it behaves over the next week or so. I'm interested to see how the economy is compared to the Miata.
And Geners, how do you immobilize the crank pulley to torque it down? Just make a brace of some sort that fits into the holes? I'm used to the Mazda/Honda method of bolting a piece of scrap metal to the crank before putting the pulley on.

Re: Gonna look at a suby this weekend
i use two long 3/8" extensions and stick them into the holes.. then use a breaker bar as a lever.. then i use my socket on the pulley nut with a breaker bar to torque down.
