The Saga Continues...

Post by andysapp »

I'm sure a coupla you guys on here know what happened Friday night... but for those who don't - I will share the insanity with you.

Friday night, we went out drifting. It was a normal Friday night
out... sliding like I normally slide. Everything seemed fine as began to head home. Once I hit the highway I noticed the car was jerking (more-so front to back than left to right) when the RPM's reached over 2300. Once I applied power to increase the rpms, the real issue emerged: once at/over 2600 rpms... the power seemed to be directing more-so to the left-rear wheel than the right-rear... making the car want to shoot right off the side of the road. I tried slowing down, which seemed to ease the problem slightly... I also tried speeding up - to see if I could pass through the problem-range of the rpms to get home. The issue would only increase as speed was added. Even when driven slowly in a perfectly straight line - the differential would still be making abrasive (more abrasive than normal) noises associated with making low-speed turns with the clutch engaged.

I basically had to limp the car all the way home at 40 mph. At FOERST, I
thought something had happened to the driveline, or the output shafts... which was causing some sort of resistance on the right-side to cause the push from the left. I decided to limp the car into my BMW dealer early yesterday morning, to check on what was the cause of this.

The diagnosis they gave me, was that the Kaaz unit was somehow
defective. They said the ring & pinion were working fine, that
something inside the LSD was causing the mis-direction of power. I
really wasn't sure what to believe at that time.

We then spent the remainder of the day back up at Batlground Engineering
removing the entire differential carrier housing the LSD from the car, and re-installing my original open-differential with the 3.15 ratio.

When we got the car up on the lift, I turned the wheels, to see if there
was any excessive play between the way each wheel rotated back and
forth. Everything appeared to be functioning normally. Once we got the
old open-diff back in the car, I took the car for a test-drive... hoping
that the problem still remained... therefore ruling out any issue with
the Kaaz, or the entire carrier assembly itself. Unfortunately... the
car drove just fine... without any problem.

I'm not really sure what to think about all of this, considering the
cost of everything spent, versus the amount of time the unit was in the
car before something broke.

I've been in touch with Nick from Diffsonline.com - and he advised me that based on my description of the problem... it does sound like the LSD itself is bad (which is the FOERST one he's personally heard of having a problem FOERST hand). It looks like I'll be packing the diff back up, and sending it their way for a full diagnosis.

I can't help but feel like that diff is NOT supposed to be in THAT car. It's insane. The one tyre fire (michelin homicide) is back in effect until all this can get taken care of. While part of me is upset about the situation - another part of me is glad it happened now, and not 2-3 months now when Formula D starts. At least my car is still drivable with the open diff... so overall - no complaints. I just want to get it all taken care of ASAP!

Did you change the fluid right after your breakin period?? Or possibly break the diff in incorrectly. Sounds like the plates are not worn in incorrectly, or at a angle. That sucks big sweaty balls, yo

isn't the kaaz rebuildable? honestly if it turns out to be defective in some way i'd get kaaz to replace it if there's a warranty of any kind. if not, just order up some new plates and rebuild that sucker.

was there a lot of metal in the fluid?

I know, yo... I've heard they are a bulletproof diff - which was why I was soo stoked to get one in the car. I had (and still sorta) have no complaints - even with the noise. I kinda grew to love the chatter... a daily reminder that she was still back there working in clunking away! :D God I miss her already. :(

Yes, we changed the fluid right after break-in. I drove in a straight line to the parking lot for break-in... and straight line back to the shop. Dan played blocker for Smyrna black & white... just in case they pulled in like wtf - and to oversee the break-in. Everything worked better than great until it broke. It's weird. :?:

I've been talking with Nick from Diffsonline (who actually joined the forum!!)... it is rebuildable... and also under warranty - so I'm sending it back up to them for a teardown and diagnosis (of the lsd itself).

I don't know about the metal in the fluid... I didn't think BMW would drain it when I took it to them - since I thought it was something with the output shafts coming from the diff... not the diff itself. Those idiots didn't think past strapping the velcro on their shoes in the morning - let alone scope the fluid for debris. >:/

so how bad was your chattering?? Did you ever add any lsd additive to your fluid?? Hopfully they will cover the costs for the rebuild, then all you have to pay for is the setup agian.

The chatter wasn't bad at all. It definitely toned itself down from the time of the initial install. I noticed sometimes it wouldn't chatter at all... especially after I went out drifting. It would sorta come and go - but wasn't bad.

I'm going to talk to them and see what we can work out with everything. I'll keep you guys posted!

you forgot to mention the good part about BMW telling you to go get a new diff in a junkyard. All E46s came with limited slips

Sorry to bring an old thread back from the dead,
but this is Nick from diffsonline.

In recent development, ive found a way to "stuff" a LSD carrier into an E46/E90/E39/E60 6 cylinder differential other than the Kaaz.

The difference is being a much more streetable diff, for those concerned with chattering noises (that usually diminish with breakin).
also it can be custom tailored to a persons needs.
as far as i can tell so far, options will be :
25% 2 plate 2 way (like a stock E36 M3 as an example)
40% 2 plate 2 way
40% 3 plate 2 way
60% 3 plate 2 way
20/90 3 plate 1.5way
20/90 4 plate 1.5way

I dont know the price yet. check the website(http://www.diffsonline.com in the future for more information. Just heads up =)

IMHO, it is the missing link to all the new BMWs.
