Are you sure it isn't a timing issue?
Sounds like when my CA's belt slipped.
I don't know much about KA's or chain drive, so I honestly have no idea if it can jump time.

Another thing that happened to one of my s13's was bad gas tank. I unhooked the high pressure line to the tank and the gas looked dirty/nasty as hell. Changed the tank, car ran good as new.

Idle air control valve may be dirty as well.

If any KA drivers have a similar problem, check the TPS and fuel pump. Thats what fixed mine.
